New Hampshire is home to some of the waterways that have helped shape New England and the United States. The 110 mile Merrimack River and its major tributaries - the Contoocook River, Pemigewasset River, and Winnipesaukee River help westward expansion in early colonial days. The 410 mile Connecticut River, which starts at New Hampshire's Connecticut Lakes area and flows south to Connecticut, defines the western border with Vermont and was instrumental during the Revolutionary War. The Piscataqua River and its several tributaries form the state's only significant ocean port where they flow into the Atlantic at Portsmouth and is one of America's great Navy and shipbuilding ports. The largest lake is Lake Winnipesaukee, which covers 72 square miles, is a quick drive for residents of Concord and Manchester to spend some time on the water boating, fishing and relaxing. With this rich history of great rivers, lakes and ocean ports it's no wonder New Hampshire continues to be a destinations for fabulous lakehomes, oceanhomes and riverhomes in the New England region.
